NEOM Showcases Stunning Coastline With Saudi Arabia’s First Ever International Beach Sport Tournaments

NEOM, Saudi Arabia – NEOM’s ambition to turn the gigaproject into a world sports powerhouse took a leap forward this week with the hosting of its first officially-endorsed international events – the first of their kind to take place in the new destination, which is being developed in the North-Western corner of Saudi Arabia along the borders of Egypt and Jordan.

Athletes from 16 nations have taken to the crystal-clear waters of the pristine beaches of Gayal in NEOM, situated on the Gulf of Aqaba, to compete in the IWWF NEOM Wakeboard Event.

The off-shore action was but one part of a sporting spectacular that also included a FIFA-endorsed Beach Soccer Cup tournament. The four-day international event included teams from Saudi Arabia, China, Egypt, England, Oman and the UAE.

Oman won in style in a thrilling final that saw them beat Egypt 5-4 after extra time.

Other events included exhibition Beach Rugby matches with players from Saudi Arabia and an all-female set of match officials, plus a Beach Tennis invitation event starring male and female players from the region.

NEOM has been described as ‘the world’s most ambitious project’ – a land of the future created to empower global talents and maximise human health and potential. Sport is an integral part of the NEOM philosophy, both at the elite level and at grass roots.

NEOM’s Beach Sports events follow the wildly successful Wing Suit & Climbing Challenge in April, which showcased NEOM’s incredible mountains to over 300 million people in 105 countries around the globe.

Hyundai Teams Up With Maroon 5 To Pay Tribute To Bob Marley Ahead Of 2018 Fifa World Cup Russia Celebrations

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – Hyundai Motor Company, the Official Partner of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, has teamed up with multi-platinum GRAMMY Award winning US pop rock band Maroon 5, to pay tribute to reggae legend Bob Marley by covering his iconic feel good hit ‘Three Little Birds’ for its new brand campaign.

Hyundai and Maroon 5 wanted to keep as close to the original song as possible as a mark of respect for Bob Marley and to capture its original spirit of peace and freedom.  

Shot on location in LA, the accompanying music video is the creative brainchild of critically acclaimed Korean-American film and music video director, Joseph Kahn who has worked with artists including: Lady Gaga, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey and Kylie Minogue, to name a few. In 2003 he won a Grammy and MTV VMA for Eminem’s ‘Without You’. He also recently won a second Grammy for Best Music Video of 2015 for Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ ft. Kendrick Lamar.

Joseph Kahn was also responsible for creating the new Hyundai television advert that will be broadcast during the 2018 FIFA WORLD CUP RUSSIA ™.

The Laureus World Sports Awards – Berlin 2016

BERLIN, GERMANY – The Laureus World Sports Awards are the premier honours on the international sporting calendar. The winners are chosen by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of more than 50 of the greatest living sportsmen and sportswomen.

Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams claimed the top accolades at this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards.

The tennis duo were named sportsman and sportswoman of the year at the Berlin ceremony for their 2015 achievements.

Djokovic, 28, reached all four Grand Slam finals, winning three of them, a feat emulated by Williams, 34.

Brazil’s Paralympic swimmer Daniel Dias, 27, was named disabled sportsperson of the year after winning seven gold medals at the IPC Swimming World Championships.

The Laureus World Sports Awards supports Laureus Sport for Good by showcasing the incredible work it does to transform the lives of individuals and communities around the world by using the power of sport as a tool to combat challenging social issues. Since its inception, Laureus Sport for Good has raised over €100 million and supported over 150 projects worldwide which use sport to tackle violence, discrimination and disadvantage.

Winners Of The Laureus Sports Awards 2015 Revealed In Shanghai Ceremony

SHANGHAI, April 15, 2015 – The world’s top tennis player Novak Djokovic, the Germany World Cup football team and brilliant young athlete Genzebe Dibaba were the big winners as the 2015 Laureus World Sports Awards were unveiled in Shanghai.Serbia’s Novak Djokovic won his second Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award after another brilliant 12 months which featured a second Wimbledon victory. He said: “This is probably the crown of my 2014 season that has been highlighted with winning Wimbledon, regaining No.1 in the world and becoming a father. It has probably been my best year so far in my life.”Oliver Bierhoff, manager of the Germany team, was at the Awards Ceremony to receive the Laureus World Team of the Year Award following the historic victory last year when Germany became the first European team to win the FIFA World Cup in South America. It was Germany’s fourth World Cup triumph.Bierhoff said: “At the final whistle we were together on the pitch, the coaches, players, team staff members, it was such a connection amongst us. For the coaches and some of the players and me it was a ten year project. And we were so happy at this moment.”Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba was named Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year after breaking three world records in different events in two weeks. She is only the third person in history to achieve this feat, along with athletic giants Jesse Owens and Usain Bolt.The Laureus World Sports Awards are the premier honours on the international sporting calendar. The winners are chosen by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of 50 of the greatest living sportsmen and sportswomen. There was an emotional welcome from the guests at the Awards Ceremony at the Shanghai Grand Theatre for South Africa’s Schalk Burger, who won the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award after recovering from life-threatening meningitis to win his place back in the Springboks rugby team.

Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo was named winner of the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award after a brilliant rookie season in which he won three Formula One Grand Prix for Red Bull. He said: “The year was awesome, one of those years which I think was as good as it could get without actually winning a title. Definitely a breakthrough in my career.”

There was a double success for the United States with wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden winning the Laureus Disability Award and Alan Eustace receiving the Laureus Action Sports Award after his record-breaking freefall from the edge of space.

Host nation China was celebrating after the Laureus World Sports Academy gave two special Awards. Retired tennis star Li Na, who has fostered a dramatic growth of the sport in China after winning two Grand Slam championships, was given the Laureus Academy Exceptional Achievement Award, while basketball legend Yao Ming, who had a stunning career with Houston Rockets until he retired in 2011, was honoured with the Laureus Spirit of Sport Award.

During the event, it was also announced that Yao Ming and Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar had been elected the newest members of the Laureus World Sports Academy.

The Laureus Sport for Good Award was presented to the worldwide skateboard programme Skateistan, which uses skateboarding as the means to change young people’s lives in countries such as Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa.

The globally televised Laureus World Sports Awards was hosted by British film and TV actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Among the presenters were Hollywood legend Bill Murray, star of iconic films such as Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters and Hyde Park on Hudson, Henry Cavill, who played Superman in the film Man of Steel, multi award-winning Korean actress Ha Ji-won, and actress and model Karolína Kurková.

The Awards Ceremony is attended by legends of sport past and present and celebrates the achievements of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of the year. The Host Partner of the 2015 Laureus World Sports Awards is Chinese textile and wool company HengYuanXiang Group (HYX), and the event has received the strong support of the Shanghai Municipal Government.

Story: QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA.Nursing a baby wombat, cuddling a celebrity-loving koala and learning to surf were all in a day’s work for Liverpool FC ambassador and club legend Robbie Fowler during a visit to Queensland this week ahead of the team’s upcoming game in Brisbane.

Robbie, one of the club’s legendary players, nicknamed “God” by his fans, was part of the advance guard for the team, who will play against hometown team the Brisbane Roar on July 17 in what is expected to be a capacity crowd for the city’s Suncorp Stadium.

As part of his visit, Robbie met celebrity-cuddling koala Tinkerbell, who has also been cuddled by professional sports players such as Roger Federer, Kei Nishikori and Petra Kvitova.

“I managed to meet a little girl before and her name’s Tinkerbell and she was a koala” Robbie says. “Apparently she has met a famous sportsman before in Roger Federer. Roger has asked her out but apparently he’s got nothing on this RF. So I’m hoping to be seeing a little bit more of her.”

Now that he’s retired from professional football, Robbie has had more time to tick off some the things he has wanted to do in Queensland – including learning how to surf at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast and getting up close and personal with local wildlife, including Tinkerbell, and 14 month baby wombat Whispa.

Despite some initial apprehension at the prospect of surfing, Robbie quickly gained confidence and skill.

“I loved it, it was brilliant and I’m glad I did it,'” he says.

“I’ve got so much more time and admiration for the teachers and surfers because it’s very, very difficult. And you know what, the short spell I was on the board, I really enjoyed it and I’ll be back and definitely give it another go.”

The English Premier League giants, Liverpool FC, will tour Australia in July, kicking off their campaign in Queensland for the first time ever.

Robbie named the top three things he liked about Brisbane.

“I think number one certainly is the weather, number two, I think the people.

“[Brisbane] has probably some of the friendliest people, not just in Australia but all over the world. I think they make you, or anyone who visits here, very, very welcome.

“And number three is that slowly but surely [Brisbane’s] getting to be a little bit of a hub for all sport, your cricket’s here, your rugby league’s here, AFL’s here, the Asian Cup’s just been here, and more importantly, the Liverpool team’s going to visit here in July so I’m looking forward to that, spending a little bit more time here and seeing a bit more sports.”

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) Chief Executive, Leanne Coddington, says Liverpool FC is one of the world’s greatest football institutions and securing the match further built on Brisbane’s reputation as a premier events destination.

“High-profile events such as this play an important role in enhancing Queensland’s tourism profile and TEQ is proud to support Liverpool FC’s tour,” Ms Coddington said today.

By delivering a range of award-winning programmes, the Foundation motivates and inspires children and adults, both at home and overseas, using football and the power of the Liverpool FC badge. Its contribution has been recognised by the award of a Community Mark from Business InThe Community.

In January 2013, Liverpool FC launched an official country-specific Twitter account for Australia and New Zealand – @LFCANZ – to help fans engage with the club online. An Official LFC Facebook page for Australia was launched in March and now communicates with over 270,000 fans every day.
