Rolls-Royce Unveils ‘Most Ambitious Car Ever Created’

Story: Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has used the launch of what it calls ‘the most ambitious motor car ever created’ to announce the creation of Coachbuild – a new division within the business.

For many years, Rolls-Royce has offered its high-net worth clients the opportunity to heavily bespoke their Dawn, Cullinan, Ghost, Phantom and Wraith models, allowing them to choose a range of options from the colour of paint to the interior design and furnishings and installations of works of art or high-tech gadgets.

However, Rolls-Royce Coachbuild will offer an entirely new service, allowing a small number of its most elite customers the opportunity to collaborate with the brand and build a unique car from the ground up.

The marque is the only luxury automotive brand that can offer this unique service.

After a four-year collaboration with three of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars most special clients today it reveals Rolls-Royce ‘Boat Tail’.

Only 3 will be made and the price for each is not being revealed.

It is a four-seat permanent drophead inspired by the Boat Tail typology popularised in the 1920s and 30s, where the hull of a yacht was grafted onto a Rolls-Royce chassis.

The three clients, who all share a love of J Class yachts, the world’s most elegant racing boats, told the designers, “Show me something I have never seen before.”

In consultation with these clients, an agreement was reached whereby three cars would share a common body, but each would then be individually, highly personalised.

The first of these three cars features a back deck that opens in a sweeping butterfly gesture, to reveal cocktail tables and a parasol.

The owner asked Rolls-Royce Motor Cars to work with the Swiss House of BOVET 1822 to create two unique reversible timepieces – one for the lady and one for the gentleman – that can either be worn on the wrist or placed within Boat Tail’s fascia as the motor car’s clock.

Boat Tail’s glove box is a hand-crafted case of aluminium and leather, designed to safely house another of the clients’ great passions, an antique Montblanc pen.

And a double refrigerator has been developed to house the client’s favourite vintages of Armand de Brignac champagne allowing it to be rapid-cooled to precisely six degrees – the optimum serving temperature of the preferred vintage.

The concept of Coachbuilding was first explored in 2017 with the creation of a ‘Sweptail’ model. This led to the three clients approaching Rolls-Royce about the creation of the ‘Boat Tail’.

Each has taken four intensive years of collaboration with Rolls-Royce’s designers and engineers to create. Pre-production engineering alone took 20-person years with a full-size clay sculpture being built first, from which the buck, or frame, is created and onto which body panels were hand-beaten from extensive, single, flat sheets of aluminium. 1,813 completely new parts were developed for the ‘Boat Tail’.

The next Rolls-Royce Coachbuild project is already underway, but no details are being released at this stage.

Entry to the programme is by invitation only with preference given to the luxury brand’s most significant clients.

Bentley Debuts An Electric Choice For The Future – The EXP 12 Speed 6e

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND –  Bentley Motors is today unveiling the future of electric luxury with the EXP 12 Speed 6e at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show.

The concept showcases Bentley’s approach to a zero-emission, electric future as well as the seamless integration of state-of-the-art on board technology in a truly luxurious, authentic way.

All-electric Bentley vehicles in the future will offer performance levels expected from the luxury brand – an immediate, effortless surge of torque and grand touring range as well as new high performance technology such as rapid inductive charging and state-of-the-art on board concierge-style services for an effortless ownership experience.

The Luxury of Electric : Effortless, Exclusive and Exhilarating

Bentley’s vision is for customers to benefit from high-speed inductive charging to minimise inconvenience on the move, and provide a range sufficient for grand touring requirements. An electric Bentley would, for example, between able to drive between London and Paris or Milan and Monaco on a single charge and the on board experience will be enhanced for both driver and passenger thanks to the integration of state-of-the-art technology.

This fusion of cutting-edge technology and beautiful materials is evident right throughout the EXP 12 Speed 6e’s luxuriously appointed cabin. The entire central tunnel, for example, is hewn from a solid piece of elegantly curved glass encompassing a high-definition OLED screen. All of the car’s principle onboard controls are accessible from here, including navigation, entertainment and climate control.

Handmade, cut-glass sections on the steering wheel contain the controls for media, communications, navigation and car set-up, as well as an instant performance boost via two dedicated buttons at the top of the cut-away wheel design. The passenger, meanwhile, has their own control panel on the front fascia with access to social media, email and entertainment.

Exquisite copper elements around the gear selector, Bentley charisma dial and in the door veneer panels are integrated into the cabin to highlight the electric performance potential of the concept’s advanced new powertrain.

The car’s intelligent infotainment system includes a personal, digital concierge – a virtual butler with the ability to connect to real-world services. This digital companion will, for example, be able to book a table at a favourite restaurant or look up flights for a business trip – all via voice command.

Designing the Future of Luxury

On the outside, the iconic Bentley mesh grille features a complex 3D geometry and smoked finish with copper highlights that identify the Bentley EXP 12 Speed 6e as a fully electric vehicle.

The exterior design is an expression of muscular, athletic surfaces inspired by contemporary architecture, the natural world and the aerodynamic shapes of aircraft fuselages.

It represents a natural evolution of Bentley’s design DNA and signifies future design direction, taking the famous powerline and haunch to new levels of drama and tension. When combined with muscular proportions and an athletic stance through the use of a short front overhang, long bonnet, low grille and wide rear shape, the exterior styling hints at the high-performance potential of the car.

The twin bonnet scoops act as highly effective heat sinks that supply additional cooling to the battery and powertrain.

The wing mirrors – which are cameras rather than traditional reflective glass – are exceptionally sleek and were inspired by the sculptural form of stealth aircraft fuselages.

When rapid inductive charging is not available, EXP 12 Speed 6e can be connected to a mains AC power supply via the auxiliary charging point, subtly concealed behind the rear number plate.

A Commitment to an Electric Future

Bentley will utilise the EXP 12 Speed 6e concept to garner public opinion and feedback to help shape its future electric vehicle strategy.

(Crewe, 6 January 2017) Bentley is today announcing its fastest and most powerful production model to date: the new Bentley Continental Supersports.


A top speed of 209 mph (336 km/h) and a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds) make the new Continental Supersports the world’s fastest and most powerful luxury four-seat car.


Similarly, its soft-top sibling, the Continental Supersports Convertible, is the fastest four-seat convertible in the world, despatching the sprint to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.9 secs) on its way to a 205 mph (330 km/h) top speed.


Bentley’s mighty W12 engine, redeveloped for the Supersports with new high-performance turbos and engine hardware, and a torque vectoring system create a Continental Supersports as agile as it is powerful. Meanwhile, unique styling cues inside and out give the new model a sharpened athletic appearance highlighting its performance potential.


As well as offering supercar pace and a highly focused driving experience, there is no compromise in the refined nature of the Continental’s ride quality. This fusion of extremes in luxury and performance make the Supersports the ultimate iteration of a model that has come to define and dominate the grand touring genre.

Extreme Power and Torque; Stand-Out Performance


A bespoke drivetrain featuring Bentley’s W12 engine combines extreme power and torque to offer exhilarating performance.


Key to the Supersports’ additional outputs are newly designed, higher-capacity turbochargers and a revised charge-air cooling system which create more boost and additional power. In order to harness these additional outputs, upgrades have also been made to the Continental’s cranktrain, including new main and conrod bearings.


These extensive engine revisions result in an increase of 80 PS (79 bhp) and 217 Nm (160 lb.ft.) over the 2009 Supersports model – a 10 percent power-to-weight and 25 percent torque-to-weight ratio improvement. The top speed rises by five miles per hour (and the 0-60 mph time drops by 0.3 seconds).


The Supersports also benefits from a new torque converter which locks up faster allowing the car to make best use of the enhanced torque figure of 1,017 Nm (750 lb. ft.), and accelerate from standstill even more rapidly.


In order to rein in this immense performance the new Supersports is fitted with high-performance carbon ceramic brakes with enhanced cooling. The brake discs are the largest of their type in the world, providing excellent performance with minimal fade under extreme conditions.


The brakes sit behind lightweight 21” forged alloy wheels, together offering a 20 kg weight saving in unsprung mass. A further 5 kg weight-saving is offered via an optional titanium exhaust system. The new Supersports is the lightest-ever iteration of the current Continental GT and lighter than the 2009 four-seat Supersports model.


Enhancing the driver experience still further, the exhaust system has been redesigned to breath more freely and provide an unmistakeable Bentley soundtrack, with down-shifts eliciting a rifle-fire crackle.


Ultimate Handling and Luxury Refinement


This performance is matched by athletic handling. The Supersports has a specifically calibrated and updated version of the torque vectoring system first introduced on the Continental GT3-R.


This dynamic system brakes individual front and rear wheels during acceleration out of corners to increase performance, whilst maintaining full power to unbraked wheels, and brakes the inside rear wheel on turn-in to improve agility. It also has a bespoke, less intrusive stability control calibration for a more precise chassis response.


The new Supersports retains the rear-biased torque split of Bentley’s all-wheel-drive system, sending 60 per cent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels as standard for a better balanced, more sporting character, but with the ability to adjust the front-rear power split depending on available traction.


Despite the focus on sharper driving dynamics, the Supersports’ lowered and stiffened dynamic suspension set-up retains all of its luxurious ride quality for passengers wishing to cover long distances in supreme comfort.



Bespoke Design Signalling High-Performance Character


The new Continental Supersports features unique exterior and interior styling cues which reflect the significant uplift in the performance capability of this pinnacle grand tourer.


Exterior changes include newly sculpted front and rear bumper designs incorporating a carbon-fibre splitter and diffuser respectively, new side sill extensions and bonnet vents also finished in carbon-fibre, gloss-black front wing vents and a new gloss-black, rifled exhaust tailpipe design. Completing the dramatic exterior look are dark-tint headlamps and tail-lamps, and a complement of black-finished brightware to the front grilles, lights, rear bumper, door handles and window surrounds.


There is also an optional, aerodynamically balanced rear spoiler and front splitter combination for the coupe, new Supersports badging, a new black and bright-machined finish for the 21” forged alloy wheels and optional side decals. Further highlighting the enhanced performance, an optional gloss-finished, Supersports-branded carbon-fibre engine cover can be specified.


The new Continental Supersports Convertible offers the luxury and refinement of a coupé yet transforms into a head-turning open-tourer at the touch of a button. The multi-layer hood ensures high levels of refinement and acoustic insulation. Exhaustively tested in all conditions from -30°C to 50°C or more, it resists even monsoon-force rain and maintains comfortable, draft-free warmth even on the coldest days.


Another practical feature, the neck warmer, makes open air driving an appealing and comfortable prospect even on the cooler days of spring and autumn. With the hood down, the Continental Supersports Convertible offers sensational performance with the sensory amplification of open-air motoring. Hood up, it’s as practical a year-round proposition as its coupé stablemate.


Inside, a host of bespoke styling details enhance the contemporary British luxury experience.


A unique colour split has been created, using three colours: the first tri-tone interior offered in this generation Continental GT. A new diamond-quilted design is incorporated in the seats and door side panels for a unique signature in Alcantara, while chequered Supersports carbon-fibre fascia panels join the existing list of ten veneers and technical finishes available. The interior is completed by new Supersports emblem stitching, and a bespoke Supersports steering wheel and unique gearlever, both featuring Alcantara accents.


A titanium exhaust option is available for drivers seeking a more intense audible experience. As well as a stirring soundtrack, the Titanium system also provides a weight reduction.


For Supersports customers seeking even more personalisation, an ‘X Specification’ pack is available, consisting of eight unique duo-tone paint treatments and carbon- fibre door mirrors and heel plates. The titanium exhaust option is included, as is a carbon-fibre finish to the interior side panels, the carbon-fibre engine cover and a gloss black finish to the 21” forged wheels.


As with all Bentleys, the Supersports can also be handed over to the highly skilled craftspeople at Mulliner, Bentley’s bespoke coachbuilding department, who will respond to individual customer requirements.

The Continental Supersports of 2009 won global plaudits for its unique combination of extreme dynamics and unrivalled luxury.


The new Supersports takes these characteristics to new heights of engineering excellence, transforming this model into the world’s fastest four-seat car and one that is, nonetheless, an everyday, usable luxury coupe or convertible.

Bentley Unveils Its New Mulsanne Model Range

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Handcrafted in Crewe, the new range comprises the Mulsanne, the performance-focused Mulsanne Speed and the all-new, ultra-luxurious Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase with its new extended wheelbase variant offering airline-style seats.

Incorporating elegantly executed styling revisions to give Bentley’s flagship a fresh, modern appearance, the range also benefits from new state-of-the-art chassis technologies to ensure the world’s most refined ride and effortless comfort, while advanced on-board features augment the trademark luxury of the Mulsanne – the ultimate statement of Bentley’s automotive artistry.

Flying Spur V8 S – The Sporting Side of Luxury

Bentley also unveils an important new addition to its Flying Spur range, the Flying Spur V8 S. Sitting between the current Flying Spur V8 and the family flagship W12 model, the performance-focused V8 S develops 528 PS and 680 Nm.

Complementing this impressive performance, a new responsive suspension tuning for the Flying Spur V8 S improves handling and body control, while the aluminium double-wishbone front and trapezoidal multi-link rear self-levelling air suspension with continuous damping control ensure that the Flying Spur’s legendary refinement is maintained.

The exterior of the Flying Spur V8 S features dark and sporting revisions. Bentley’s iconic matrix grille is black as standard with an exclusive body-coloured insert which, along with optional dark-tint front lamps and a Beluga gloss rear diffuser, gives the Flying Spur V8 S a dramatic on-road presence.

Inside the cabin, styling is precisely matched to the sportier exterior aesthetic and includes piano-black interior and three-spoke sports steering wheel as standard.

Tuned for power, Bentley’s renowned 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 S engine develops an additional 21 PS, developing 528 PS (521 bhp / 388 kW) compared to its V8 sibling’s 507 PS (500 bhp / 373 kW). A mighty 680 Nm (502 lb.ft) is on offer from 1,700 rpm. This powers the Flying Spur V8 S to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the V8’s already impressive sprint time.

The V8 S has a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h) with power delivered to the road via all-wheel drive with a 40:60 rear-biased torque split for sure-footed, engaging driving in all road and weather conditions.

Bentayga in High Demand

Also on Bentley’s stand at Geneva is the Bentayga – the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world. Combining unparalleled luxury with sporting ability, off-road performance and everyday usability, the Bentayga offers a true Bentley driving experience.

Following its high-profile world debut at the Frankfurt motor show last September, customer reaction has been extraordinarily strong to the world’s first luxury SUV.

In response to this high demand, Bentley has increased its first-year production capacity to more than 5,000 cars.

Inspired by the new Continental GT3 and its impact on the world of motorsport, our Motorsport Collection – debuting at Geneva – is a first for Bentley.
